Sir David Attenborough interview

NG Kids Hi, David! You must’ve travelled a lot when you were making your Life In Cold Blood DVD?
Sir David Attenborough Yes, I did. I went to Australia, America and Africa for this show.
NGK Is there anywhere on Earth left for you to visit?
SDA Of course! I know very little of Central Asia, the Gobi Desert or Tibet. I’ve never been because it’s so high, the animals are very few and far between. So you have to work a lot harder to find stuff!
NGK What’s been your most amazing animal experience?
SDA Watching birds of paradise in Papua New Guinea. Watching a species that had never been filmed before was incredible.
NGK Have you got any pets?
SDA No, I don’t have pets now because I live by myself and I go away quite a lot. I’ve had lots in the past though, snakes, chameleons, cockatoos, hanging parrots, gibbons, lemurs…

NGK Wow! That’s a lot of pets. Which was your favourite?
SDA I enjoyed having bush babies most. They’re very engaging little creatures and I was very fond of them. I also like tropical fish. Until 10 years ago, I always had them. I first got tropical fish when I was eight and I adore them.
NGK So what cool stuff can we expect to see on Life In Cold Blood?
SDA We have a nice shot of a crocodile roaring. When the males do it their whole body vibrates. So when they lie close to the top of the water and roar, the water dances on their backs in a very spectacular way.
NGK Will there be any endangered species on the show?
SDA Yes, there’s a disease that we knew would affect a species of frog in Panama, so we went to film it before it disappeared. The scientists there were very alarmed. So just after we filmed they collected the frogs and took them into captivity to keep them safe!
